From the Father’s who do it all to the Father’s who do it even when they don’t have to and every single one in between.   1. Take him to Top Golf because we all know he’s the most “tee-rific” Dad in the world. Enjoy the day together swinging some clubs and bringing out his competitive side. You can also order some yummy treats while you’re there. I recommend the donut holes, they’re above par just like his Dad game. 
  2. Is his beard game strong just like him? Single Barrel Barbershop and The Men’s Chair are just 2 of the wonderful old school traditional barbershops sure to give him a wonderful haircut and spruce up his already handsome looks. If he used to hate facial hair but then it grew on him (ba-dum-cha) then be sure to check out The Beard Club. It’s a wonderful monthly delivery service to treat him even after Father’s Day.   3. Is food your Dad’s love language? If so, take him to The Son of a Butcher in the Pepper Place District. He can pick out fresh cuts of cheese, seafoods, and meats. Let him fire up the grill and do something he enjoys. For an extra special touch you can always purchase new (and even personalized) grilling tools and gadgets to say, “Happy Father’s Day to the rarest of them all.” 
  4. Did you hear the joke about the fast pitch? Forget it, you just missed it. But if your Dad is a baseball fan you’re close to Regions Field for a Barons game, just a day trip away from Huntsville to watch the Trash Pandas, or make sure he knows he’s out of this league and take him to Atlanta to enjoy the Braves. For any sports fan Dad, this gift is sure to be a “hit.”
  5. Besides Dads, fish are the best musicians…Because they know their scales. I’m aware that these jokes are getting worse the further down the list we go but maybe by the end, you’ll be fully prepared for a day filled with Dad jokes. Don’t want to hear anymore…Drown them out with music. Buy Dad tickets to his favorite show. We have a wonderful collection of vinyl in this house, so if your Dad fits into that category, you can always surprise him with a trip or gift card to Seasick Records in Crestline. 
  6. Did you hear the one about the Dad that fell in love with his power tools…It was because his saw reciprocated. (That one was actually good and you know it). Power tools are always a good idea and if you can’t find something at Lowe’s, Ace, or Home Depot gift cards are a great idea as well. 
  7. Detailed Dads love detailed rides. Get his vehicle detailed professionally, even though I’m sure the small children do a great job. There are tons of places locally that do a great job. A lot of them are actually mobile now and will come to you. Also if he enjoys tinkering with his car and or installing new gadgets then mechanical gifts are always a great idea as well. I recently heard one about the Dad addicted to brake fluid…Says he can stop anytime. I know we wish he would…And me too. 
  8. Ever tried eating a clock? I don’t recommend it…Very time consuming. I do however recommend sentimental items/keepsakes. A few suggestions are wallets, watches, and even personalized nightstand trays/stands or charging stations. Check out Etsy for some great ideas in this department. 
  9. I used to be addicted to soap but now I’m clean. That was a good one and everyone “nose” it. I really can’t stop now. Seriously though, he likes to smell good too. There are tons of places who sell amazing body wash and skin care for men. Lush, Ulta, World Market, and  Bath and Body Works just to name a few. There are also tons of monthly delivery services who offer wonderful soaps and body wash items as well. 
  10. You’ll never be able to fill his shoes but you can get him some new ones. What Dad doesn’t want new kicks? Take him shopping and out for lunch. If he’s not a fan of shopping, pick some out and keep the receipt. Just don’t buy him anything with velcro, it’s a total rip off.

I know the Dad jokes have been brutal but truthfully, we recognize everything you do and we know how lost we’d be without you and we’d gladly replace every empty toilet paper roll for life just to have you in it…Our lives, not the bathroom for 45 minutes at the most inconvenient times. Just to clarify. 😉 Seriously though, thank you for the influence you have on the tiny human lives and for the way you mold them and shape them and teach them as you lead by example today and everyday. It’s no (dad) joke just how wonderful you are and how lucky we are to have you!

For me, motherhood has been about so many things…Love, compassion,beauty, empathy, growth, chaos, change (from personal change to diaper change, all the change), and lists. There have been never ending lists all day everyday. Some are real tangible lists but most of them end up, for me anyway, in the very cluttered inbox that is my mom brain. If you have recently joined the wonderful journey of motherhood but find yourself trying to decipher through the advice and books and pins and blogs then allow me to firstly welcome you to the hood. It’s truly the most beautiful, magical, wonderful, chaotic, mostly fun filled thing you will ever do with your life. There is nothing like it. Secondly, I would like to try to simplify things a bit for you, from what you actually need to take to the hospital, realistic and helpful gift ideas, items that you want to be sure you have before you meet your precious baby, and ways for you to adjust to changes that happen afterwards including how family and friends can help. 

 

Let’s start with the things you will want to make sure you have on hand before your precious newborn joins the world…

 
This list is the most imperative for me because these are items that make life just a little bit easier while your healing and adjusting and waking up to soothe a crying newborn. I can promise you that having these items handy and not having to run to the store for last minute items will save a lot of stress and tears…From your little one and you as well. 
 
  1. Blackout curtains – Do these really need an explanation? You’ll want sleep and the only way for you to sleep is for your newborn to sleep. I know you want all the cute new baby nursery feels so there are several ways to still achieve the level of cuteness you desire and still get the peace and quiet you and your newborn so desperately need. You can buy normal black out panels in a variety of colors and hang them on a separate curtain rod underneath the super cute themed curtains that pull the nursery together perfectly or you can find a pattern and color scheme that matches your babe cave. There are so many color and pattern options for blackout curtains these days. Also, if you take nothing else away from this list of must have items, invest in a Hatch product. There are several options for babies, kids, and even adults as well as different sizes offering different features/functions. You and your sleep will be forever grateful for this purchase. 
  2. Newborn monitor – This was one of our most important decisions, biggest purchases, and honestly just most overwhelming for us to choose from. There are so many monitors on the market these days and every store has so many to choose from. What features do you actually want/need? This is personal preference entirely but I’ll share my must haves in a monitor. I wanted a SIDS detector and video capabilities with microphone. We decided to go on Amazon and just read reviews for different brands and models and that proved to be helpful for us. We landed on an Angelcare model that offered all of our needs and honestly my youngest is 3 and it’s still in her room since she’s upstairs. Just peace of mind for me and the mic feature has saved me 20 million steps back upstairs just for her to be up there screaming “I love you” or “I want water” at 2 in the AM. Owlet wasn’t a thing when she was born but it’s another great option. Some people want color instead of black and white, picture capabilities, cell phone connections, etc. Again, this is an item you’ll choose based on your personal preferences but reading reviews prior to going to the store, deciding 3-5 things you want in a monitor, and being okay with splurging here. You won’t regret not going for the cheapest one. 
  3. Medicine/Frida – While you’re stocking diapers and wipes, make sure you swing by the medicine aisle and grab a few things. You’ll want infant tylenol and infant motrin, gripe water, butt paste (Boudreaux’s is a favorite), and pretty much everything from the Frida baby collection…Especially the nose frida as disgusting as it looks/sounds. You will appreciate every single item Frida baby makes within the first month of your babies life. Guaranteed!
  4. Humidifier – This is an absolute must! They help to alleviate cough and cold symptoms and offer other benefits as well. Dry air is often the issue for anyone who suffers from nasal infections or colds. Cool mist humidifiers work to increase moisture in the air and speed along your recovery time. Also hot water or vapor can burn children if they get too close so always choose cool mist for babies and children especially. Frida baby also makes a 3 in 1 humidifier, diffuser, and nightlight that is amazing. Ensure that whatever product you choose, you have a regular cleaning routine to avoid any bacterial growth. 
  5. Breast pump – Make sure you have found a breast pump that you like and again, I went to Amazon and read tons and tons of reviews and pros and cons and did my research on every model breast pump available. Also, call your insurance company BEFORE you go to the hospital and ask them what pumps they cover and have them send you whatever pump you desire that is available through them. Breast pumps can be expensive but my insurance covered mine 100%, as do most. I did have to buy some extra parts but it was nothing compared to the pump cost. Also, I found steam bags for my breast pump parts for about $10. The bags are reusable and have a number system on the bags for you to mark how many times that particular bag has been used. You just pump, then throw all off your parts in this bag when you disassemble each time, you add a small amount of water, and you microwave them. Game. Changing. It saved me so much time not having to wash each individual pump part 17 times a day. My parts were clean and sterile and it was an absolute breeze. 
  6. Nursing Pillow – These are good for so many things: Pumping, nursing, tummy time, sitting up, comfort, support, etc. I’m pretty sure we had one in every room of our house. 
  7. Bottles – This is something I recommend 2-3 different brands of for a few reasons. Your baby will have a preference and it isn’t always the same as your preference. Also, certain bottles are designed to help with reflux and other specific needs. Pick a few brands with different specifications and let your babe try them all before you drop tons of money on bottles your baby doesn’t care for or don’t alleviate gas or colic or reflux. We spent a fortune on Dr. Brown’s bottles, had to have them, and she acted like she struggled with feeds. We read that often times the cheaper bottles offer nipples that babies are more prone to so we dropped $20 at Target on the cheapest bottles and baby girl was never happier. Gerber First Essential bottles were better for us than the Dr. Brown’s but you may find that you baby has colic and Dr. Brown’s is the best option for you guys. You have to try a few to know so that’s why I recommend just getting 2 bottle of 2 or 3 brands and letting babe tell you what works best for them. Every baby is different. Also, if you do decide Dr. Brown’s is for you check places like Ross or TJ Maxx. They will typically have them at half the cost and there is nothing wrong with them. 
  8. Bath products – You want to be informed about what is going onto your babies skin because there is nothing more sensitive. Detergents and bath products can be very triggering to some. Read all the labels and look for clean products free of harsh dyes or chemicals to help avoid any skin reactions that you possibly can. We also found several options that offer monthly delivery services and we were so pleased. Hello Bello was our go to as they are plant based products and cheap. Honest Co, Burt’s Bees, Seventh Generation, and Aveeno are all wonderful options for babies and their sensitive skin as well. 
  9. Thermometer – You will be glad you have this on hand to avoid a 10 PM run to the nearest open drug store. Our favorite was the Braun no touch thermometer for a few reasons. A. It was only about $50 and we’re 3 years in and still going strong and B. because it was no touch you could check babies temp without ever having to wake him/her.
  10. Aside from the obvious needs like wipes and diapers and a crib let’s talk pacifiers. This is a touchy subject and I was 110% against giving ours a pacifier (first time mom thought right here) and then to avoid a NICU trip and provide some comfort, our nurses grabbed a bili blanket and popped that pacifier right in. Avoid the desire to stock up on all of the cute matching trendy pacifiers. Initially, similar to the bottles, you want 2-3 different kinds of pacifiers for your baby to choose from. He/She will quickly let you know which ones they are fans of. Mine really liked the one from the hospital so we stuck to the soothies despite having a basket full of the cute Ryan and Rose pacis.

Let’s move on to the packing of the elusive hospital bag…

 
This, for me, was very stressful for some reason. I’m notorious for over-packing for everything so it’s no surprise that this would be no different. Looking back though, I really didn’t need half of what I brought and I could have saved myself so much stress and anxiety had I just minimized my list of “things” and “must haves.” I’m going to try to simplify it for you so that maybe it’s one less stressor.
 
  1. Pillow(s) – Hospital pillows suck. There, I said it. They are either styrofoam or plastic coated and they are not comfortable to anyone ever. Bring your own pillow(s) for a personal feel and also for your own comfort. 
  2. Phone charger – Because duh. You will take so many pictures you will likely get upgrade notifications related to your storage. Take all the pictures, send all the texts, but remember to relax, unwind, and just enjoy this time. 
  3. Ponytail holders – You won’t be able to find any in the hospital and you’ll likely want your hair up at some point in time. 
  4. Lip Balm – If you’re in labor for a while you will feel dehydrated and you will appreciate having your favorite lip balm handy to prevent dry chapped lips in the process. 
  5. Outfit – Bring 1 cute matchy matchy monogram/embroidered going home outfit. There is no need for 10. Pack some onesies and 1 cute outfit. This was not advice I took and I most definitely look back and think of how much I packed and how little we actually needed…At the hospital anyway. 
  6. Robe/PJs – You’ll want to be comfortable while you’re in the hospital and also if you’re pumping/breast feeding you’ll want a robe or tops best suited for easy access. Nursing bras are also helpful. Comfy PJs that button down are great for strolls around the floor as well as breast feeding. 
  7. Snacks – For you and your partner. So hospitals provide meals but I was still having odd cravings. It helps to bring some of your favorite snacks and change for the vending machines. The energy and calories needed to breastfeed will require you to be well-fed. Kind Bars and trail mix were staples for me. My stepdad also brought us all of his favorite snacks, which was so great…For him. 😉
  8. Dry Shampoo – People will probably stop by and you’ll want to look presentable but you just gave birth so your body is still recovering. Dry Shampoo will be a very good friend of yours while in the hospital…And at home in the days and weeks (and months and years) to come. 😉
  9. Toiletries – Bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste and deodorant as well as travel sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner. Remember the hospital pillow conversation from earlier. The only thing worse than a hospital pillow is hospital toothpaste. Trust me. 
  10. Sandals, socks, and slippers oh my – I recommend a really cheap pair of flip flops for all of your showering needs. You’ll actually want to shower and probably enjoy it as warm water is very soothing. Hospital shower flooring…Not so soothing. This is an inexpensive item and they came in very handy for me. Also, toss them prior to discharge and you’ll have 1 less thing to pack. You’ll also want to bring some comfy socks or slippers for all of the walking both before and after labor. MAKE SURE YOU WALK!!!!
 

Next up, what to buy? Gift ideas for expecting parents…

 
Gift ideas that are practical and realistic and actually helpful. Sure, you may want some lavish bassinet but they won’t be bassinet size for long and you’ll wish you had been more practical. Buy the bassinet but find one that doubles as a rocker so you’ll have 2 items without taking up all the space or breaking the bank. Here are some things that make great gift ideas. 
 
  1. Babymoon – Have a group of friends that wants to go in together to do something special before baby gets here? A weekend getaway is perfect for you and your partner to enjoy some time together and just relax before everything changes, in the most beautiful way. 
  2. Cleaning service – Post partum Mama is lucky to take a shower and blow dry her hair in the same day. Dishes and Laundry pile up and add to the amount of stress. Offer to pay to have a cleaning service drop by weekly or biweekly just to help for the first month or so. Every little bit helps and new mamas are always grateful for someone taking things off of their to do lists. 
  3. Food – Gift cards, meal trains, Grubhub, Door dash, or delivery services like Hello Fresh or Blue Apron are all wonderful and very practical gifts for a new family adjusting. Amy uses Hello Fresh and swears by it! She’s even shared her code with us so we can get $120 off!!! Here’s the code! 
  4. Diapers – Speaking of delivery, there are options on amazon, hello bello, and many others that deliver diapers, wipes, lotions, body wash, etc right to your front door. Sign them up for a month with a diaper delivery service and I promise you will have made life so much easier in so many ways. 
  5. Lavish gifts – Buy Mama a gift card for a mani/pedi or a massage. Buy Dad a gift card to his favorite golf course. Anything you can do to show them you are thinking of them and that their life prior to baby still exists even though it may be slightly different now is always a welcome gift. 
  6. Babysitters – This is a gift that is worth it’s weight in gold while not actually being costly. We want date nights after baby. A night where we can fix our hair and wear something other than his t shirts. We have to have trustworthy babysitters to do so though. If you personally know of wonderful babysitters in your area, share their names, or even offer to pay for a sitter so these new parents can enjoy a dinner date or a movie or even just a nap. *cough cough…Amy’s oldest babysits! 
  7. Post partum recovery items – These items are typically cheap to purchase/make and they are worth a fortune to post partum Mamas. Make her some padsicles or buy her a basket with pads, tucks, bottom balm, peri bottles, colace, nipple cream, the essentials. 
  8. Non Maternity items – While maternity clothes are comfy, there’s something to be said for new non-pregnant panties and jeans without a waist band the size of a tire. Buy her a gift card to her favorite store to pick up some new items that will leave her feeling like a hot mama or better yet take her out for a shopping day. She’ll enjoy getting out and some adult interaction more than you know.
  9. Salon – New mamas are often so busy taking care of everyone else that they forget to take care of themselves or put their needs last on the list. There’s a rule somewhere that once baby gets here your hair will only go into one of those weird tangled messy buns. Call her hair stylist and make an appointment for her to get a cut or color or at the very least wash and style. She will feel like a new person. 
  10. Photography session – This is something that we treasure and we will cherish forever and ever. Most photographers offer packages where you can pick a few sessions and gift them if you choose. For instance, we were able to pay 1 price and included in that price were maternity pics, labor and delivery and fresh 48 (both done at the hospital), 2 week at home lifestyle session, and all of our milestone pics (3, 6, and 9 month as well as 12 month smash cake session). It was amazing to know that we would have these pictures forever. Truly the most wonderful gift. A few other items we could not have lived without our first few months especially…

 
– Shusher/Noise Machine – Baby shusher and Skip Hop Baby Soother were our 2 favorites. Any uses this in all her newborn sessions!! 
– Cover – 4 in 1 cover for high chair seat, carseat, buggy, and nursing cover. Milk Snob and Itzy Ritzy were our favorites but you can find them everywhere now like Walmart, Amazon, and even customized ones from Etsy. 
– Diaper caddy – This was so convenient to have nearby and full of diapers and wipes and butt paste. Also, if you have a 2 story home, buy 2 and thank me later. You’ll be grateful you’re not running back and forth upstairs and downstairs and back again for a midnight diaper change. If you have one upstairs and one downstairs everything will always be convenient. 
Scented garbage bags – Few things smell worse than dirty diapers but don’t spend excessive amount of money on a diaper genie. Instead buy some scented garbage bags and a cheap garbage can and just take the bags out every day. You don’t want them to sit and linger any longer than that anyway and you’ve just saved hundreds of dollars not buying an unnecessary diaper genie and unnecesary diaper genie bags. 
– Earth Mama Nipple Butter – It’s cheap, organic, and it lasts forever. This will be your “breast” friend if you pump/nurse. 
– Water Bottles – Invest in a good water bottle and keep it with you all day everyday. Again, self care is important even though it becomes an afterthought once baby arrives. Remember to stay well hydrated. 
– Dr Teal’s anything – Epsom Salts, lotions, body wash, add them all to your baby registry. They are soothing in every sense of the word. 
 
Welcome again to the hood. I hope you have found these lists to be helpful and not intimidating and that you know that your newborn will feel loved and protected if you don’t have any or all of these items. I would tell you to sleep when your newborn sleeps or whatever cliche advice most people give to moms but it’s not realistic. My advice is this, have someone you can call if you just need some adult stimulation and conversation, have someone you can talk to about every rash or bump you notice on baby (NEVER use google), have someone you can vent to if you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, and just know that you’re not alone. Sleep deprivation plays mind tricks on you sometimes so just know this… You are wonderful, you’re doing something beautiful, the love you will soon experience is like nothing you’ve ever known, and Frida baby is the Chick-Fil-A of all baby products.

Mom, Mommy, Mama…Happy Mother’s Day 

To everyone called Mom, Mommy, Mother, Mama, Bonus Mama, and Ma (as my 3 year old likes to call me like she’s part of the Jersey Shore cast or something), this one is for you.

Here you will find local food spots, tasty treats, and fun filled places to celebrate that special one this and every Mother’s Day. 
 
Let’s start with food because A. No one wants the where do you want to eat/I don’t know, where do you want to eat, argument on Mother’s Day, B. One of her favorite gifts for Mother’s Day would be to not have to make all the plans and decisions, C. She doesn’t want to do the dishes and D. When she says she will be happy anywhere, she means it. As long as she is surrounded by her family, she is exactly where she wants to be…Except in the bathroom.

  1. Satterfield’s is offering Mother’s Day specials including Chicken Scallopini, Salmon Croquettes, and personally my heart is set on the Pork Tenderloin served with brussel sprouts and sweet potato hash. Mouth watering yet? We still have 9 more spots to go.
  2. BrickTop’s is a family favorite for a few reasons: They literally have something on the menu for everyone from prime rub to sushi and this year they will be featuring their dinner menu all day with brunch options available from 10 AM – 1 PM. Also, if you don’t get The Chocolate Chip before you leave, you have missed the opportunity for her to tell you, “This was the best Mother’s Day ever!” 
  3. Chuck’s Fish specials have me reeling, pun totally intended. Braised short ribs with crawfish polenta, chargrilled filet with jumbo lump crab, seafood copping, and baked oysters are just a few that top the list for me. You won’t be disappointed with any of the delicious choices offered up here. 
  4. Daniel George is a gem I admit I had never heard of until recently, but y’all, when I say get here, I mean, “GET HERE,” in my best Mom voice. The grilled flank steak is absolute perfection! Also, I’ve been told the buttermilk fried chicken and shrimp and grits are both top notch dishes. And you want the brownie a la mode, trust me. There’s also a strawberry key lime tart if she’d rather not have chocolate. 
  5. We reserved spot 5 to talk about FIVE bar because us Mama’s are always planning. Full brunch menu, $20 mimosa pitchers, and live music, what else could she ask for?
  6. The Yard is another awesome spot offering up Mother’s Day brunch. Tucked inside the Elyton Hotel downtown is a menu boasting the most delicious breakfast and lunch items from made to order omelets to prime rib. Call 205.226.9298 to make reservations. 
  7. Sol y Luna is raising a glass to all of our favorite Taco Mamas in the Ham by serving a full brunch and dinner menu from 11 AM – 3 PM. Tomatillo Lobster soft taco, Roasted Garlic Sweet Mashed Potatoes, Empanadas Surtidas, and the Chicken Chilaquiles are just a few of my favorites. All she wants is for you to feed her Mexican and tell her she’s pretty anyway. 
  8. If you want to give her the gift of great food, excellent service, and an unbelievable atmosphere then you need to grab some seats at Bottega. They offer Italian Cuisine in a casual but upscale setting. Salmon, Chicken, Rabbit, Duck, there is not a dish on the menu that is anything less than divine. 
  9. While we’re talking casual, Italian, and superb, let’s add Joe’s Italian to the list of places to visit. Every dish I’ve ever had has been phenomenal but my favorites are Lasagna Bianca, Eggplant Parmigiana, and Lobster Ravioli when they have it. Also, if you’ve never had their cake be sure to grab a slice…And 4-6 forks. The strawberry is my personal favorite and now I’m not sure I can wait until Mother’s Day for my fix.
  10. Last on our list is a fun Mother’s Day tradition from our friends at Full Moon BBQ. Not only can you get amazing food and yummy desserts, but they also gift a rose to the Mom’s dining in. Isn’t that even sweeter than their tea?

 Rumor has it, that calories don’t count on Mother’s Day and the only thing even half as sweet as our wonderful Mom’s are these local treats.
 
  1. Farrelly’s Moscato cupcakes…I don’t even know if I need to say anything else. They’re that good! They also have Mother’s Day specials if you want to dine there and then grab dessert. You do need reservations…And Moscato Cupcakes. 
  2. Bendy’s Cookies and Cream. Everything you need to know is in the name itself. Wonderful owners, amazing cookies, and phenomenal ice cream all in 1 place. My favorite treat here is the cookie butter ice cream sandwiches with snickerdoodle cookies. There are so many options though and I mean it when I say, you can’t go wrong. 
  3. Crumbl Cookies in Vestavia has a rotating weekly menu of the “World’s best cookies.”The famous Milk Chocolate Chip is always available but there are 4-5 specialty flavors each week as well. Also, I was unaware there was ice cream but apparently it’s true. I can’t think of anything better unless they’re able to remove all of the calories. 
  4. Bertolone’s is home to my all time favorite Strawberry cake. Order a slice and be sure to bring some people who came prepared to share it because a “slice” is about the size of a whole cake. The tiramisu and salted caramel are also phenomenal.
  5. Big Spoon Creamery is an artisian ice cream company that uses local farmers and offers decadent seasonal flavors. We have loved this company from day 1 when they were delivering flavors monthly as a subscription to now having 2 locations (1 in Avondale and 1 in Homewood). Ice cream, Sammies, and Sundays just taste better here. Also, if mom is vegan, there is a milkshake here just for her. 
  6. Edgar’s is a one stop shop of deliciousness…Coffee, breakfast, lunch, dessert, the list goes on and on. Take mom to grab coffee and breakfast and beat the Mother’s Day lunch crowd. Take mom after lunch to come in and pick out a fabulous dessert, handcrafted with nothing but love from someone, even if it wasn’t by you. Stop by and pick up desserts or a tin of cinnamon rolls and surprise her with some yummy goodies and coffee. She will smile just seeing you. Of course, holding the Edgar’s bag helps too. 
  7. The Spun Cow because mom just wants everyone to be happy. With 50 rotating cotton candy flavors and decadent ice cream, floats, and shakes to choose from, there is truly something for everyone. 4 words…Pina Colada Cotton Candy. Need I say more?
  8. Say I love you with Cookie Dough Magic. Edible cookie dough that you can have delivered to mom or make a trip to Avondale, Trussville, or Huntsville and let her pick her own sweet treat. Choose from 12 amazing flavors and even safe for those moms to be as well. 
  9. Fleming’s is a wonderful dining option but if you’re like me, there’s never room for dessert after my meal there. Maybe take mom in for just desserts. My recommendations are the white chocolate bread pudding cheesecake or the walnut turtle pie. 
  10. K&J’s…Home of elegant pastries and extravagant milkshakes. Mom will thoroughly enjoy this stop because she knows everyone will have to come join her just to finish 1 shake. “Kolossal Milkshakes” = Kolossal Time. 
  11. Cakes by Elise is a local favorite!!! Her strawberry cakes and cupcakes are amazing!!! 
 
Gifts are wonderful but I’ll fill you in on a little secret. What most mamas genuinely desire is a clean house and time with their families…In no particular order. Instead of wrapping her a gift, share fun experiences with her, do something special for her, just show her that she’s loved and appreciated. 
  1. Paddywax Candle Bar just makes “scents.” These gifts are thoughtful, inexpensive, and versatile. Pick your scent, pick your vessel, pour, enjoy a wonderful burn life, and repurpose as a pencil cup, cereal bowl, cream and sugar set, succulent planter, or my personal favorite, a margarita glass. You can purchase one already hand poured or you can enjoy a day making candles with mom.
  2. Birmingham Botanical Gardens always ranks high on my list of things to do. Make a picnic for mom, go on an afternoon stroll, hire a photographer (Amy P Photography can be contacted for all of your photography needs) to capture some sweet moments surrounded by the most perfect scenery.
  3. Ozan Vineyards and Winery is always a fun stop. You can reserve a shaded outdoor table for the ultimate Tuscan experience, tour the winery, or even enjoy a picturesque train ride to and from the vineyards. Make sure to try the Chilton County Peach  and the Shelby Blanc Scuppernong.
  4. Invite her to tea. Lillie’s Cup located at Arlington Historic House and Gardens is hosting a Mother’s Day tea Sunday May 8th from 2 PM-4 PM. Tickets include a tea experience with a variety of delicious loose leaf teas, a superb selection of savory treats and sweets, and an overall perfect afternoon with mom. Pinky up. 
  5. Don’t just buy her flowers, let her pick flowers. Go tulip picking in Montevallo. Take her to the Market at Pepper Place where you’ll find an assortment of fresh flowers to choose from. Support any of your local roadside fruit stands who typically have a wide variety of plants and flowers to choose from. She will enjoy the experience more than the flowers guaranteed. 
  6. Cat-N-Bird winery is truly a hidden gem. There isn’t an onsite vineyard here but they import grapes and juices from all around the world before starting the fermentation process until they are ready to bottle, cork, label, and serve it to you. Because of the boutique style production of these wonderful hand made bottles, new wines are introduced and retired every month. Make a trip to Chelsea and enjoy a flight, cheese boards, and even wine slushies. 
  7. Pamper her. Moms are often so busy taking care of others that they neglect themselves. Gift cards to nail salons, hair salons, boutiques, or massages, and facials are all a real treat to allow mom to indulge in a little self care so she can feel refreshed and renewed. 
  8. Is Mama a sports fan? The Barons will be playing the Smokies at home on Mother’s Day. Yummy food, amazing drinks, and America’s favorite pastime with her family hits it out of the park for sure.
  9. For me, personally, I love sentimental items. Homemade cards, crafts, and breakfast in bed will pretty much guarantee my Mama heart is happy. Throw in some coffee and the smile may never leave my face. It doesn’t have to cost much of anything. Also dollar general sells plain white coffee mugs and pinterest has so many cool hacks about using sharpies to have your kiddos make a custom mug she can keep forever. 
  10. Surprise her with a Mommy and Me photo session she will cherish forever. Often times, moms are found behind the camera but she would love to be included in the memories as well. It’s almost time for Summer but you still have some mild PTSD from those COVID years at home so you need to know where to send your kiddos once school is out…Look no further. Well, look a little bit further because I’m going to share some of the most exciting summer camps in and around the Birmingham area. 

 

Traditional Camps

 

When I think of Summer Camp, I immediately envision, a camp in the woods with cool cabins, where I unexpectedly bump into a stranger that ends up being my twin sister. We hate each other then love each other and share Oreos dipped in peanut butter, but I think maybe that’s The Parent Trap so I’ll fast forward and talk a little about Camp Fletcher. Camp Fletcher is a week long “Experience” on a 300 acre woodland preserve. Summer camps birmingham ALThey offer tons of outdoor challenges and activities and aim to promote only the most positive atmosphere. This camp is a great opportunity for self-growth, intentionality, and rising up to the challenges set before our youth to be great leaders, role model, and friends. There is also a day camp available if you still need someone at home during the week to eat all of your groceries. 
 
Camp Briarwood is also a great option if you are looking for a more traditional summer camp. This is a Christian camp for boys and girls that gives them the opportunity to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. Overnight Camp is held at the YMCA Camp Chandler in Wetumpka, Alabama and the day camp is held at Camp Kanawahala in Chelsea, Alabama. Both camps have picturesque grounds for all kinds of fun. Depending on the camp, kids get to experience activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, riflery, archery, arts and crafts, horseback riding, sailing, skiing, and a high ropes course.  
 
Deer Run is another fantastic overnight camp. So fantastic, in fact, it’s been voted #1 overnight camp by parents. There are a few options to choose from…A 1 week camp for completed 3rd-10th graders and a 2 week overnight camp option for completed 6th-10th graders. There is even a family option for those campers looking to unwind and unplug and focus on quality time with each other.

There are several different age specific camps tailored to each desire and age that allows for confidence building, encouraging environments, and lots of 1 on 1 teaching. 
 
Team building, games, and music oh my! Dawson Music Academy Summer Camp is the place for it all. July 11-15 preschool and elementary age campers will have the opportunity to explore instruments, enjoy recreation, and rally together in worship. Birmingham Children’s Theatre is a great option for children ages 4-18. Storytelling, Comedy, Musical Theatre…There are truly options for everyone. These wonderful classes build skills and aim to promote self esteem and confidence through creative expression. Skill building is also a huge plus and promotes both active listening as well as sharing.
 
Red Mountain Theatre is host to another wonderful theatrical camp for children age 4 and up. Classes are developmentally appropriate and include storybook drama, theme-based drama, technique classes, and even some advanced training as well. These classes aim to promote performance skills by way of acting, dancing, and singing. Does your child ooze creativity? Ready for them to ooze it off of your clean kitchen table? Summer camps birmingham ALDo It Yourself Crafts will be offering a summer camp and every week there are a number of projects available for them to enjoy. From clay creations and painting to art journals and fused glass there are so many options for them to explore.
This camp is for 2nd-6th graders and spaces are very limited. Cost is $249 and includes all of the projects they will be doing all week.

 

 

Sports Camps

Sports fans look no further. There are several options for the athletically inclined children of your home from golf and gymnastics to ballet and fencing. Sign us up Coach!
 
Camp Fliptastic is a perfect 10 for anyone looking to get their kids involved in gymnastics or to enjoy kids with similar interests. This is a week long camp at Head Over Heels where the daytime routine will be full of several gymnastics sessions (circus arts, ninja, and gymnastics) as well as games, fun, arts and crafts, and movies.Summer camps birmingham AL The final evening there will be an opportunity to show off all of the skills they’ve learned and mastered with a finale performance. I don’t know about y’all but I was ready to sign up at ninja. 
 
Birmingham has a fencing club and it looks like if you tried it just once, every other sport would be pointless. Get it? Point-less. This is such a unique sport and their summer camps are for fencers of all levels. They offer games, warm ups, and snacks (that don’t come from your pantry), in addition to the fencing and drills you will learn during your time here. 
 
If you are raising the next Freddie Freeman then you need to be enrolling in The Silver Glovez Academy. Don’t walk, RUN…Pun totally intended. Fundamental baseball skill and development are of the utmost importance here. Instructors focus on fielding, footwork, throwing pitching, hitting, and situations ensuring that players grade 4-8 understand game strategy. 
 
 

Academic/Tech Camps

 

Beauty & Brains is a STEM camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) that strives to empower young girls and inspire them using projects heavily fueled in critical thinking processes. This camp is fun, creative, and very hands on. The vision of this camp is for these young female campers to leave confident and affirmed in their genders knowing that they also have the ability to be game changers and idea makers in this world. Speaking of girls running the world…Ever heard of Elle Woods? Do you have a rising junior or senior? UAB department of Criminal Justice offers a pre law summer camp called Journey to Attorney. Here they will be able to explore local landmarks with a tremendous legal affiliation, reimagine actual legal cases, and even participate in mock trials. This experience allows them to work one on one with practicing attorneys, professors, and trial experts. It also allows them to experience UAB campus life and meet other students with similar interests. They should leave this camp with improved writing, reasoning, and presentation skills that will help them regardless of where they go to college and what they choose to pursue as a career. Seats are limited and scholarships are available. No objections here. 
 
Is your kiddo the next YouTube sensation? Always attached to a game or electronic device of some kind? Gardendale First Baptist is home to Connect Camps.
These camps are for completed K-5th graders. This is a one week day camp full of non stop fun and daily faith based lessons. They will engage in so many amazing activities and make lasting friendships in the process. A high quality camp that you and your kiddos both enjoy is a difficult task but here it is.
 
This next camp had me at the mention of gaga ball. Cornerstone Ranch camp is packed full of activities…Zip lining, canoeing, field games, basketball, water slides, ropes course, crafts, and daily devotions just to name a few. There are a few different camp options: 4 weeks of elementary camp for rising 1st graders through rising 5th graders and 2 weeks of middle school camp for rising 6th graders through rising 8th graders. Camp Booth is a Passport kids camp located in West Blocton including group cabins in a secluded gated camp ground surrounded by white fences and luscious fields making it the perfect outdoor classroom for Bible Study. Safety is top priority here and staffing rations are designed to reflect that. Every night they will be able to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the culture they have been learning about. Autism Awareness Month – Amy P Photography

Autism Awareness Month

 

Check out some local businesses in our community that are doing their part to be all involved in this awareness.

 

 

 

April is Autism awareness month and while I do hope that most are aware of Autism and informed about the spectrum, my wish would be that April (and every other month) would be Autism INCLUSION month. Did you know that 1 in 6 people has a sensory need or an invisible disability (PTSD, Autism, Strokes, and Dementia just to name a few)? Did you also know that there are several local places working hard night and day to make sure they are accommodating in every way to every single person in our community regardless? I just wanted to take a few minutes, as someone who has had personal experiences with Autism, and highlight some of the local businesses in our community that are doing their part to be all involving while acknowledging that we all have different needs. 

 

Let’s start with The Birmingham Zoo. One of the first things we noticed when the zoo reopened after it’s amazing “face lift” was the sensory room near the restrooms when you first walk through the entrance. For anyone who is overstimulated or just needs a quiet place to regroup, you are welcome here. You’ll notice the signage as you walk throughout the zoo indicating “Quiet Zones” where there is little activity and offer spaces to sit down or regroup if overstimulation does occur. Most of the indoor spaces tend to be louder and noisier so there is signage that deems these areas “Headphone Zones.” The Birmingham Zoo also has weighted lap pads to help during activities where sitting is required such as the train, the sea lion show, or the wildlife show. The zoo itself is also wheelchair accessible throughout it’s entirety, including both the carousel and the train as well. Overall, if you or anyone in your party has any disabilities or sensory sensitivities, this is such a great place to visit and enjoy.

 

The McWane Science Center is another fun filled way to spend your day and ensure that everyone in your group is included. There are so many educational things to do and the interactive portions are unrivaled. Accessibility elevators and ramps can be found in all public areas including the IMAX Dome Theater. In addition to all of the in-person fun, The McWane Center also offers a “Virtual McWane” where children can participate in science activities and educational videos. Stay Home Science and McWane on the Web are other great programs designed to help your children learn in fun educational ways even from the comfort of your own home. 
 
 
Another Birmingham attraction that is sensory friendly and disability accessible is The Birmingham Museum of Art. There are many accommodations for visitors with a variety of needs including those who use mobility devices, have low or no vision, are color blind, or have other sensory sensitivities. They have done a fantastic job teaming up with the Autism Society of Alabama to provide sensory packets. These packets are available upon request at either entrance and include ear plus, sunglasses, and fidgets. 
 
 
The Vulcan looks after us in more ways than one…From high on the hill overlooking downtown for miles and learning how to better serve our community through sensory inclusivity. They set a goal about 4 years ago to provide a positive experience to those with sensory issues and they have used sensory bags to aid in this endeavor. These bags include noise canceling headphones, earplugs, verbal cue cards, fidget toys, and weighted lap pads. Anyone in the Visitors Center will be more than glad to provide you and your party with one of these bags to ensure that everyone is included in the fun. 
 
 
One place I recently discovered is the sensory nature trail at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The garden is beautiful and calming in and of itself, but the sensory nature trail allows you to look, see, and feel different things all throughout the garden. The fact that this is just a large quiet outdoor space is reason enough for us to venture out and enjoy a beautiful relaxing day. 
 
 
AMC has partnered with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings. Sensory Friendly Films is a national organization that exists to improve the lives of all affected by autism. Not only do they turn the lights up and turn the sound down so you can get up, dance, walk, shout, sing, or whatever makes you happy, but also they are increasing public awareness of autism, advocating for appropriate services, and providing the latest information on treatment, education, research, advocacy. These Sensory Friendly Film programs are available on the second and fourth Saturday of every month and are family friendly in nature. 
 
 
Red Mountain Park opened the Butler Snow Sensory Trail in 2018 which includes 14 different activity stations engaging the senses from smelling herbs and touching different forest materials to birdcalls and musical pots and pans. This trail also includes a short tock wall, bench swings, and a quiet zone for families to sit and take it all in. This trail is about 0.14 miles long and is located near the entrance of the park. P.S. There’s also a dog park…How’s that for including the whole family? 
 
 
The Hoover Met Complex has cozy spots including a rocking robin, motion features, and sensory features specifically designed to provide children the opportunity to activate technology devices on the playground. The swings are designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities. Even the colors and textures that are found throughout the playground are purposefully designed. They are also home to an adult changing room, which is the first of its kind for an outdoor playground/splash pad.
 
 
A favorite for us when my oldest was between 3-6 was Let’s Play. If cleanliness is next to Godliness than Let’s Play is a little piece of Heaven on Earth. It is always spotless and you will always find someone somewhere cleaning something. Let’s Play hosts Sensory Friendly night on the second Tuesday of every month. The facilities are closed to the general public during this time so be sure to mention you are there for “Sensory friendly play.” The lights are dimmed and the noises are reduced giving you and your family and fun filled sensory friendly environment to enjoy. Also, be sure to bring socks for you and everyone in your party. I say this because I was unaware at 33+ years old, when I would not be partaking in the climbing of the things, that I would need socks to chill on the wall with the other parents doing the same but the 17 year old managers are good at handling kiddos and parents alike so moral of the story…Everyone will need socks regardless of any activities you will or will not be doing. Also in case I forgot to mention, EVERYONE needs socks. 
 
 
Urban Air is another great location that we have recently learned about, who offers sensory friendly play on select dates/times. It’s specifically geared for children with Autism and special needs to enjoy time at the park without loss music or flashing lights. Socks are also a requirement here as well (but only for those participating). They are available for purchase at each location if you forget to bring yours. 
 
 
Those are just 10 of the places here in our wonderful city that are striving to make a difference to be all inclusive for any and everyone with Autism or special needs. We are so grateful for the effort that is being made to ensure that everyone is afforded the same opportunities. If you don’t know about KultureCity, especially if you or a loved one is affected by a sensory sensitivity or disability, I strongly urge you to check them out.
